I designed two covers for separate editions of The Red Headed League, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Although this short story hardly fills thirty-one pages, it has been accompanied in these two versions with introduction, commentary, and full-page illustrations that make it the perfect gift for any book lover. This lavender paperback is an affordable alternative to the gold-stamped leatherback collector's edition. Both are high-quality and easily legible.
Below is a peek into my brainstorming process. The first step I took when brainstorming was to research existent covers. I found a few inspirational but many underwhelming, and I determined to do this classic story justice by making more compelling designs.
The paperback cover illustrates an important turning point in the story: the moment when Sherlock reveals his presence to the over-confident bank robber in the cellar.
For the collectors' edition, I took inspiration from the grid process during my text placement. Using the gridlines as guides, I created a unique triangular pattern on the front cover.
The covers were designed in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.
